So, I found the speed of the child, but I can't find the angle relative to north. I tried using the arctan(x/y) to find it in radians, but that didn't work. So I tried arctan(y.x) but it still didn't work. My calculator is in radians.

First of all, pretty much every problem you'll do in the class has a picture you need to have in your head in order to do the problem. I'm guessing you might not have draw it. Here's what it should have looked like:

Second, you're flailing. Guessing random formula's won't help, because it means that you don't really know what to do. You need to go back read the chapter sections in the text book, they'll do problems like this one. Third, one of the formulas you tried to use is almost right, except that it relates to the complementary picture to this one. Figure out what formula to use for *this* picture.
